Attention AOL Journals Users -- United States

Dear AOL Journals user,

We're sorry to inform you that on Oct. 31, 2008, AOL® Journals will be shut down permanently. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

It is very important that you save your Journals content before the shutdown. We're working on a way to easily move your Journal to another blogging service -- you can expect an email within the next week with more details about how to do it. We want the transition to go as smoothly as possible for you, so you'll have two choices. You can either save your information manually and find another place to blog on your own, or let us handle the migration for you and automatically transfer your Journal to a different blogging service.

In the meantime, please bookmark the People Connection Blog, where you can find out more about AOL Journals. You can also subscribe to the People Connection Blog RSS feed to stay informed about any changes. We'll be updating the People Connection Blog often, so please check it regularly.

Sincerely,

The AOL Journals Team

How to Save Your Info -- Australia

This page contains information regarding the shutdown of AOL Hometown and Journals (blogs).

The AOL team want to let you know about upcoming changes that will affect your current Hometown and Journals experience.

As of 31 October 2008, AOL Hometown and AOL Journals will be shut down. We urge you to save your content immediately to avoid losing any information.

How to save your content

There are several ways to save your content:

1. The quickest and easiest way to do this is by copying and pasting your content into a word processing document such as Microsoft Word, Notepad or even into an email and mailing it back to yourself.

If you have any images we suggest you save them separately by right clicking on the image, choosing "Save Picture As" and allocate the drive on your PC where you would like to save them to.

2. Save files directly from your browser.

a. Internet Explorer users: Click on 'File' ® 'Save As...' ® 'Web page type' you'd need to choose the option 'Web Page Complete (.htm, .html) and allocate the drive on your PC where you would like to save them to.

b. Google Chrome users: Click on the button 'Control The Current Page' ® 'Save Page As...' ® 'Save As Type' you'd need to choose the option 'Web Page, Complete' and allocate the drive on your PC where you would like to save them to.

c. Mozilla Firefox users: Click on 'File' ® 'Save Page As...' ® 'Save As Type' you'd need to choose the option 'Web Page, complete' and allocate the drive on your PC where you would like to save them to..

3. Keyword access (this is only applicable for AOL Hometown users who have an AOL Broadband account): Log into your AOL software and go to Keyword:FTP. You can get to the keyword by typing 'FTP' in the search box at the top or hitting 'Ctrl' and 'k' at the same time and typing 'FTP' in the box that appears on screen.

The steps are detailed as simple instructions below if you choose to use the FTP option.:

i.Type in Keyword: FTP and hit 'enter'

ii. Click on "See My FTP Space"

iii Highlight the files you'd like to backup, click on "Download Now" and allocate the drive on your PC where you would like to save them to.

We urge you to save your data as soon as possible to avoid losing any information.

Sincerely,

The AOL Team

How to Save Your Info -- Canada

Downloading your Hometown files via the AOL Client

  1. Sign into the AOL Client

  2. Go to Keyword: FTP

  3. Check to insure that your computer has enough storage space for your content prior to downloading.

  1. Click on the See My FTP Space button

  1. Select the file you wish to download, and click the Download Now button. Note, you'll have to perform this step for each file you wish to download. If your file resides in a directory (e.g., a hometown page in the myhomepage directory) you'll first need to double-click on the directory to access the files inside, at which point you can then download them individually.

Downloading your Private and Public Hometown files via FTP client

1. Download and install an external FTP client. There are lots of freeware or shareware FTP clients available. AOL members can search in the AOL Download Center, or reputable download sites such as Download.com, Shareware.com, Tucows.com, etc.

2. Configure your FTP client. The exact instructions will vary according to manufacturer, so please check their instructions. The basic outline goes like this: Somewhere in the settings, you will be asked for the following information so you can connect to your FTP space: host address, User ID and Password.

· For host address, enter members.aol.com

· or User ID, enter anonymous (there may be a checkbox or pulldown for Anonymous, that you have to do also)

· For Password, enter the full e-mail address of the AOL screen name's FTP space you're trying to access.

For example, for my JournalsEditor screen name, my host address will be members.aol.com; user ID will be anonymous (the check box is also checked), and

password will be journalseditor@aol.com:

  1. Check to insure that your computer has enough storage space for your content prior to downloading.

  2. Make sure that you are running the AOL client, signed in using the same screen name as the screen name whose FTP space you're trying to access. This is very important -- your AOL client connection takes care of the authentication, so you can't access someone elses private FTP space. If my AOL client connection is signed in with my JournalsEditor screen name, I can only access the private JournalsEditor FTP space with my external FTP client.

  3. Connect to members.aol.com and download your files.

Downloading your Public Hometown files via FTP client

2. Configure your FTP client. The exact instructions will vary according to manufacturer, so please check their instructions. · For host address, enter members.aol.com/YourScreename (do not include @aol.com)

· or User ID, enter anonymous (or leave it blank)

· For Password, leave it blank
